Seattle Concert Photographer Mat Hayward: Kimbra photographs

Mark my words, I’m typing this on July 12, 2012.  By this time next year Kimbra will be a household name.  Many people have heard her voice and don’t know it.  She is the female voice in the song “Somebody I used to know” by Gotye.

A few months ago I had never heard of her.  I had the opportunity to photograph the Gotye show at the Showbox and Kimbra was opening.  I had no expectations but I couldn’t help but notice the buzz amongst her fans in the front couple of rows.

She came out on stage and exploded with energy!  Her radiant smile, unique style and flamboyant gestures with her hands and body had everyone dancing along immediately.

Not too much time had passed when Foster the People came to town and Kimbra was opening.  I got an email from 107.7 the End that she was coming in to the studio to record a couple of songs and was asked to shoot some photos of her.  It took me all of about 1/2 of 1 second to agree.

She was about as nice as you would hope she was and her voice is amazing.  I was in the studio with her and the band and for the first time since I purchased my new camera I was shooting video along with my friend Ryan.  The results of that video shoot can be seen in the embedded video here.  It was pretty cool because while I was shooting I was not wired in and wearing headphones so I couldn’t hear any of the looping or the instruments, only her voice.  It made for one of the most unique experiences I’ve had as a music photographer.
